WNBA傳奇明星，3屆奧運金牌的後衛凱蒂‧史密斯，將在台北時間明天宣布退休，結束她的17年職業生涯。

現年39歲的史密斯，將在下一戰面對華盛頓神祕人隊的比賽後宣布退休，她說：「我想我準備好宣布退休了，我很幸運而且受到神的眷顧才有這個機會告訴大家，『嘿！我要退休了』這句話。」

她在WNBA生涯得分6439分名列第2，1996年自俄亥俄州大畢業，並沒有馬上投入當時的WNBA，反而加入另一個當時剛成立的女子職業聯盟ABL（美國籃球聯盟）。她生涯在兩個聯盟一共累積7872分，更是美國女子籃球聯賽史上最高紀錄。

史密斯今年轉到紐約自由女神隊，雖然年屆不惑，但仍保有一定身手，今年平均還有6.1分、1.8助攻，她在台北時間11日對鳳凰城水星隊，仍砍下全隊最高的17分。

但她認為，自己的籃球生涯已該走向下一個階段，她說：「我的人生都和籃球相關，過去17年間我把我的身心都奉獻給籃球，但當我年紀越大，也體認到退休的時刻遲早會到來。我未來應該會轉任教練，幫助其他球員開創她們的籃球生涯。」

史密斯曾是美國女籃在2000、2004、2008年3屆奧運的金牌功臣，她2001年獲得WNBA得分王，2008年則獲選為WNBA的總冠軍賽MVP，也被球迷票選為WNBA史上最偉大的15名選手之一。
