人物：改革派教宗若望二十三世

（法新社梵蒂岡30日電）前教宗若望二十三世（John XXIII）50多年前出乎眾人意料，領導天主教會開啟與世界更開放的關係。他將於明年4月和若望保祿二世一同被晉封為聖徒。

若望二十三世1881年11月25日生於義大利北部小鎮索托伊爾蒙泰（Sotto il Monte）。

1958年10月28日，當他77歲成為教宗時，很多人認為他只會是個過渡人物。

然而，他意志堅定，有進步的想法，使梵蒂岡觀察家拿有心改革的教宗方濟各（Pope Francis）來與他相提並論。

若望二十三世就任不到三個月，就宣布籌備召開第二次梵蒂岡大公會議。這項罕見的天主教全球主教的集會在1962年10月開始舉行。

未能等第二次梵蒂岡大公會議結束，若望二十三世就在1963年6月3日死於胃癌併發症，在他完成「和平通諭」（和平於世）不到兩個月後。

和平通諭除了對天主教徒外，還對「普世所有善心人」發言，一部分是對當時冷戰中政治情勢的回應。

梵蒂岡大公會議引導天主教會內許多改革行動，包括擴大平信徒對禮儀的參與，及用拉丁語之外的語言望彌撒等。
