設學生有 x 人 : 


依題意若每間宿舍住10人，就有7人沒得住,得宿舍有 (x - 7)/10 間。

若每間宿舍住12人，就有一間沒住滿,
表示
12(x - 7)/10   - 11  ≤  x  ≤  12(x - 7)/10   - 1

只需解 :
12(x - 7)/10 - 11   ≤   x
12(x - 7)  ≤  10x + 110
12x - 84  ≤  10x + 110
x  ≤  97

∴ 學生最多有 97 人。 

如有興趣也可算算學生最少有幾人 :
解 x  ≤  12(x - 7)/10 - 1
10x  ≤  12x - 84 - 10
47  ≤  x
學生最少有 47 人。
