大陸媒體報導，5月22日，杭州市一醫院接收了一個呼吸衰竭的病人，最後確診得的是橫紋肌溶解綜合症，經詢問他發病之前吃過小龍蝦。
這名男子在月初與友人吃了一大盆小龍蝦，未料，兩天後發現自己右膝蓋有些腫，但他並沒有在意，就醫後也沒有好轉，四肢還變得越來越沒力氣。5月16日，他因呼吸急促、喘不過氣被送到臨安當地醫院搶救，5月22日，因呼吸衰竭轉入杭州市第一人民醫院。
診斷後，市一醫院ICU副主任胡煒指出，他的肺像一個七八十歲老的慢性支氣管患者的肺。得知男子吃過小龍蝦，醫師推斷，每年這個時候都會斷斷續續收治十幾二十例的橫紋肌溶解綜合症患者，其中，不少人年紀很輕，在發病前也吃過小龍蝦。5月26日，男子被確診為橫紋肌溶解綜合症。
2010年7月到8月23日，江蘇省人民醫院、南京鼓樓醫院和當地其他醫院，陸續收治了19例有橫紋肌溶解綜合症的病人，這些病人在發病前都吃過小龍蝦。
報導說，包括擠壓、壓迫，突然劇烈運動，導致肌肉拉傷，服用特殊藥物等，都可能會引發橫紋肌溶解綜合症。
報導說，橫紋肌溶解綜合症是因肌細胞產生毒性物質而導致腎損害的一種疾病，俗稱肌肉溶解。
致於小龍蝦為什麼可能引起橫紋肌溶解綜合症？胡煒指出，可能有三個原因。一、洗蝦粉。二、小龍蝦的生長環境。三、個人體質對小龍蝦中的某種物質敏感。
洗蝦粉是一種可以讓小龍蝦的賣相變好的物質，主要成分是草酸、檸檬酸和亞硫酸鹽，洗蝦粉洗過的小龍蝦又紅又亮。但人體若過多地攝入這兩種高濃度的酸，會出現腹痛、腹瀉、呼吸困難等症狀。
胡煒也說，「我們也很難判斷市面上的小龍蝦是否用過洗蝦粉。因此，預防相對較為困難，我們也只能建議患過橫紋肌溶解綜合症的患者，康復後盡量不要再吃小龍蝦了」。
