於1958年，香港置業的主席 Hugh Barton 有一個夢想，把西方最先進的設備融合獨有的東方傳統服務，於中環興建一間饒富東方特色的豪華酒店。於1963年9月1日，他的夢想實現了，經典的香港文華東方酒店(以前的名稱為文華酒店)落成並進行試業。

香港文華東方酒店於1963年10月25日正式開業，當年酒店提供650個房間，合共27層，為當時港島區最高的建築物，並迅即成為著名地標，而這個領導地位更一直延續至今。

酒店開幕後大獲好評，南華早報驚嘆報導酒店內的高速升降機只需21秒便能將賓客送至頂樓；當年香港文華東方酒店為第一家酒店提供直撥電話，更是亞洲第一家酒店於每個房間均設立浴缸，令當時負責的建築師笑說：「賓客是兩棲生活的嗎？」
