馬兜鈴酸再被台星兩國學者合作證實是很強的致癌物質。台北榮總臨床毒物科醫師吳明玲是首位公開揭露馬兜鈴酸極強腎毒性及致癌性的學者，當時中藥材商群起反彈，壓力如排山倒海般湧至，上百位業者包圍北榮，要求撤銷吳明玲的醫師執照。

當時吳明玲為民眾用藥安全把關的堅韌態度，不亞於日前病逝的林杰樑醫師。

昨天吳明玲接受專訪還掩不住激動的心情；她強調，當年面對強烈抗議被迫出面發表道歉聲明，是針對民眾因此不敢服用中藥，以及影響中藥商生計致歉，絕非是研究有問題。

當年，院方要她暫時別曝光，家人要她別再談中草藥了，先生擔心她的安全，要她請假暫時別看診。後來吳仍繼續看診，先生只好在診間外頭站崗。吳明玲回憶當時感受到的是「可怕的社會。」

吳明玲為此躲避媒體多年，但還是兢兢業業在研究及診療，她說，自己口才不好，最好還是少講話。

吳明玲說，過去含馬兜鈴酸成分的中藥材都是合法的，後來即使需加註警語及限醫師處方才可使用，不過，當時民眾沒醫師處方也買得到含馬兜鈴酸的中藥材，甚至連科學藥廠使用馬兜鈴酸，卻未標示警語，政府管理形同虛設。「當年根本是通用，而不是誤用！」
