May 30, 2013 started out as a peaceful day in Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey. A group of activists had gathered in Gezi Park, a tree-filled area inside Taksim Square. They were hoping to save one of the few remaining green spaces in central Istanbul from being converted into a complex with a new mosque and shopping center. There was a festival-like atmosphere as people sang, danced, and enjoyed street food. However, that soon ended when the police came storming into the area. To break up the rally, they attacked the group with tear gas and water cannons.
The protestors are complaining about a loss of cultural heritage, no freedom of the press, and incidents of police brutality. Since then, protests have spread throughout the rest of Turkey.

2013年五月三十日，土耳其最大的城市伊斯坦堡展開了平和的一天。一群激進份子已經聚集在塔克辛廣場內種滿樹的加濟公園。他們希望保住伊斯坦堡市中心一處少數僅存的綠地，能夠免於被改建成結合清真寺和購物中心的複合區。在節慶般的歡樂氛圍中，人們歌唱、跳舞，並享受著街頭小吃。然而，當警察猛然衝入該區時，這一切很快就結束了。為了解散集會，警察用催淚瓦斯和鎮暴水槍攻擊群眾。
由於文化遺產的喪失、沒有新聞言論自由，以及一樁樁警察的野蠻行徑，抗議者抱怨不斷。從那之後，抗議行動便擴散至全土耳其。
