前歐洲央行委員司麥基(Lorenzo Smaghi)在出版的新書裡，拋出了震撼彈，透露了在經濟危機期間，歐洲政治的運作黑幕。

在名為「撙節之死」一書中，司麥基透露前意大利領導人貝魯斯科尼於2011年擔任總理期間，計劃讓意大利退出單一貨幣。他說，不久後，這件事便讓老貝加速自總理寶座上落馬。

根據周四每日電訊報刊登的該書摘錄顯示，這位意大利經濟學家指出，貝魯斯科尼甚至與鄰國領袖德國總理梅克爾，而後法國總統沙科吉，討論了意大利退出歐元的計劃。

雖然貝魯斯科尼的反歐元態度，從來就不是祕密，但他曾與其他領袖認真討論退出歐元計劃，倒是前所未聞。

司麥基於2005至2011年擔任歐洲央行執行委員會的委員，因而在歐洲經濟危機期間，得以親身參與歐洲經濟與政治的密室協商。

有關經濟危機期間，希臘與德國關係的困境，司麥基指出，直到2012年秋季，梅克爾依舊認為應將希臘趕出歐元。但他說，當了解了退出的全面衝擊後，她對希臘的立場已有所改變。

這本爆料書籍出版時機，正值希臘幽靈持續糾纏著梅克爾的競選連任計劃。德國反歐元的各政黨正大肆攻擊她處理希臘與歐元區危機的種種缺失。

但談到歐元解體，司麥基警告，任何國家若退出歐元，便可能面臨外部責任違約，進而將擴大其他歐元區國家的損失。

他對採取撙節措施，做為復甦的方式，大加抨擊。他說，撙節引發了不滿，並導致社會分裂。
