對於現生的珊瑚來說,由珊瑚明顯的年成長紋,能使我們做到精確的年代指認。對於化石珊瑚而言,最近發展出很準確的釷-鈾定年法(230Th/234U dating technique),對於一百年到十萬年的化石珊瑚標本,能提供誤差小於1%的分析能力。因此我們可選擇需要研究的某一特殊地質時段來做古環境的研究;而且由於珊瑚骨骼的成長速率相當快,有些種屬每年可以達到1.5公分。而目前化學分析所需要的標本量很小,因此對於古環境重建的研究工作而言,理論上可以達到以月或星期為單位的超高解析度。
