歷經數個月的政治激辯與抗爭後，法國議會於日前通過同性婚姻法案，並於本(5)月18日經總統歐蘭德（Francois Hollande）簽署通過。不過一名反對同性婚姻法案的極右派學者舉槍自殺，表達對該法案的抗議。
反對同性婚姻的法國極右派歷史學者韋內（Dominique Venner），法國時間21日下午4時左右在巴黎觀光景點聖母院大教堂內舉槍自殺，1500名遊客立即被疏散、教堂被迫關閉。
韋內是許多歷史書籍以及期刊的編輯，他不但在部落格上反對同性婚姻，也譴責總統歐蘭德頒布的同性婚姻法。在他自殺前曾在其部落格透漏訊息，他寫道「5月26日的示威者有理由對他們的不耐煩和憤怒叫喊，需要一個具戲劇性和象徵性的新壯舉來喚醒夢遊者。」
法國內政部長瓦爾（Manuel Valls）聞訊後立即趕到現場。他表示，自殺事件發生時，約有1500人在聖母院內。瓦爾沒有任何政治評論，但強調地點的象徵性。
他表示，韋內在約1500人面前自殺，對聖母院的忠實信徒而言是一個很大的衝擊，因為聖母院是法國也是巴黎最具象徵意義的教堂。
歐蘭德2012年競選時將同性婚姻合法化列為競選總統的主要政綱之一，當選後利用社會黨的執政優勢，大力推動法案。不過在法國，同性婚姻議題曾引起保守人士與宗教團體激烈的示威抗議。今年1月及4月，反對者曾發動示威遊行，本月26日將在發動大規模示威遊行。
