括號內的兩個that是連接詞（conjuction），分別帶出兩個［名詞子句］當不定詞to hear的受詞。兩個子句各有自己的主詞：serpent, he。
that用在關係子句才有可能是[關係代名詞]，當子句的主詞或受詞。

哈姆雷特是傷心地趕回家後，才聽說父親是被毒蛇給咬死的。

不定詞的時間點比主要動詞晚，所以寫成hastened ... to hear ...
