加拿大針對結婚超過18年的夫妻研究後發現，配偶的聲音，是在眾多聲音中是最容易辨認的聲音，但是，隨著年紀增加，聽力逐漸喪失，老年人則不容易從吵雜的聲音中聽見另一半的聲音，而且，男人聽太太說話，記性也不如女人聽先生說話來得佳。

加拿大皇后大學研究者邀請23對44歲到79歲的中老年已婚夫妻參與實驗，受試者都已結婚超過18年，首先受試者必須念出包括顏色、數字及4個重要單字組成的句子並錄下自己聲音，之後再讓每位受試者戴上耳機聆聽另一半的聲音，不過，同時間仍有其他人說話聲音干擾，因此受試者必須將聽到配偶的說話內容記錄下來，第二次實驗則是記錄別人說話的內容。

結果發現，人們記下配偶說話內容，正確性比聽陌生人說話高出許多，證實人們確實在一堆聲音中，較能夠專注聆聽自己配偶的聲音。研究者薔絲洛德表示，「熟悉感就是一項好處，從這項實驗就可以看出。」

另外，研究結果也意外發現，中年夫妻除了能成功辨識配偶的聲音外，對於辨識其他聲音的能力也不錯。薔絲洛德表示，「中年人已經可以從先熟知配偶的聲音後，再去辨別其他不同的聲音。」

研究結果也指出，年過60歲後，人們會較不易記起陌生人說話的內容，但仍舊會記得配偶的聲音。也就是說，當人們逐漸變老後，藉由聲音去組織畫面的能力變得不足，也說明了為何老年人通常有諸多聲音下，聽不見他人說話的聲音。

此外，相對於讓妻子聽配偶說話，丈夫通常比較容易在短時間內就將太太說過的話忘得一乾二淨。

本次研究結果刊登在《Psychological Science》期刊。
