科學家在印尼發現新品種的老鼠，研究人員分析DNA，確定老鼠不僅是新種，而且是新屬。巧合的是，發現新老鼠的地方就是「物競天擇」理論的發源地。

印尼多家媒體指出，來自丹麥哥本哈根大學和印尼當地的研究團隊在北摩鹿加（North Maluku）哈馬赫拉島（Halmahera）的偏遠山區發現這種老鼠。研究團隊拿花生醬做誘餌，在樹幹和洞口設陷阱，已捕捉6隻。

新種老鼠背上有粗糙的棕灰色皮毛，腹部呈灰白色，白尖尾，有3對乳頭。

研究人員分析老鼠的DNA、頭蓋骨和牙齒，確定不僅是新種，而且是新屬。這一發現已經在「林奈學會動物學期刊」（Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society）上發表。

由於新種老鼠在博基麥考特（Boki Mekot）山區發現，研究團隊命名哈馬赫拉博基麥考特鼠（Halmaheramys bokimekot）。

領導研究的哥本哈根大學學者法伯（Pierre-HenriFabre）指出，這種新齧齒動物顯示，這個地區存在大量未知的生物多樣性以及保護當地生物的重要性。

新老鼠的發現地曾經是進化論的發源地之一。1858年，英國博物學家華勒斯（Alfred Russel Wallace）在這裡寫信給達爾文，初步闡述他對新物種發展的觀點。兩人因此合作提出「物競天擇」理論。
