英國倫敦動物園17年來第一隻新生的蘇門答臘虎，出生才三周，還沒分出公、母，也沒來得及取名字，竟然在獸欄的水池裡意外淹死，令動物園內的保育人員非常難過。五歲的雌虎馬拉蒂三周前生下這隻小老虎，前後花了6分鐘的時間。然而12日上午卻被發現倒在欄內的水池邊，經檢驗後確定是不慎溺斃。

老虎媽媽馬拉蒂懷孕105天，而園方對懷孕的消息還一直保密。9月22日小老虎出生時，保育人員都透過隱藏的攝影機觀看生產實況，對新生命的到來十分興奮。之後他們一直密集照顧這隻小老虎，卻沒想到竟發生此種意外。蘇門答臘虎目前的數量估計約僅300隻。
