報老闆親中 公信力下滑
香港明報由知名武俠小說家金庸（本名查良鏞）與友人沈寶新於1959年5月共同創立，以代表知識份子的良知自居，政治立場保守，讀者群以中產階級、專業人士、企業決策者等為主。曾5度被評選為香港最具公信力的中文報紙，但2010年起公信力逐漸下滑，今年1月公布最新調查時更落居第3，被迫刪除報頭「報網一體 公信第一」字樣。
明報母公司明報企業2008年與馬來西亞星洲媒體、南洋報業公司合併，改名世界華文媒體公司，由1995年入主明報的馬來西亞華商拿督張曉卿職掌。現年78歲的張曉卿創辦大馬「常青集團」，從伐木業起家，跨足媒體、資訊科技、觀光等產業。據美國「富比世」雜誌估計，張曉卿2013年資產淨值估計達18億美元，在全球10億美元富豪榜中排名第831名，也是大馬第8大富豪。
張曉卿立場親中，近年積極擴大對中國投資，包括與中資合作的廣西欽州「中馬產業園區」，規劃投資100億美元。在2012年12月世界中文報業協會年會上，張曉卿以首席會長身分發表演說，聲稱在習近平新政府成立之際，中文媒體也要建立全新的「中國論述」、「中國模式」。在明報今年元旦新年賀辭中，他更盛讚習近平的改革魄力，「展現過去所沒有的力度」。
